Rosamund unveils the 1,000 Paper Cranes memorial

On 14 July, Rosamund attended a special event at the Children’s Inpatient Ward at University Hospital Lewisham to unveil the 1,000 Paper Cranes memorial following its installation in a new display case.

The 1,000 paper cranes were created by local children several years ago in memory of Ella, inspired by the Japanese tradition that cranes represent hope, peace and healing. Since then, the memorial has become a lasting tribute to Ella’s legacy and a reminder of the importance of protecting children’s health through cleaner air.

The event also marked the 70th anniversary of the first Clean Air Act, celebrating both the progress that has been made and the continued commitment needed to ensure clean air for future generations.

Rosamund was joined by Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust’s Chief Midwife, Shirley Peterson; Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Jo Sutcliffe and Head of Nursing for Children and Young People, Robert Cole as well as the Mayor of Lewisham, Liam Shrivastava. The ceremony also featured a moving performance by the NHS choir, making it a fitting occasion to reflect on Ella’s legacy and the collective determination to create a healthier future for every child
